Soap adventure

Was envisioning a lovely malachite swirl of shades of green, black and white in little rounded cakes.  Unfortunately, the fragrance made the soap batter sieze in less than a minute.  The whisk was standing straight up in the bowl.  Saved through the magic of hot process, although most of the colors got all mixed together.  Green clay, nettle, spirolina, kaolin clay and charcoal.  Rustic is manly - right?

Balneario Rio Pambre

One of the things we discovered on our last trip was a Balneario (Thermal Spa/Hotel) tucked away in the hills around Palas de Rei, the next town about 20 km east.

According to their website, the Balneario Rio Pambre has 23 rooms, 11 in the main building and 12 in the traditional thatched pallozas, all with bath, telephone, safe, air conditioning, central heat, TV, WIFI (only in the main building). They also have a restaurant, bar-cafeteria, gymnasium and thermal baths/spa.

Prices don´t strike me as excessive either - 65€ for a double room during the low season, and 85€ high season. That rises to90/110€ for the spa-package. Consult the website for specials and further info (In Spanish. Maybe they need me to translate their site for them.)

We strolled around, the buildings are just above a lovely river with a small waterfall. They also have a striking view of the Pambre Castle. (We´ve been to the castle and frankly, it needs some work. But then it´s really old.)

Also from their site - a video of the Ulloa area neighboring ours, produced by the Lugo Provincial government.  Now, I want to check out the rafting.

A great resource for when we find the restoration overwhelming, and who knows - a future outlet for a soaping empire?

Rustic Bathrooms

Perhaps it´s coincidence, but as the prospect of our life savings vanishing into the maw of the Spanish banking system becomes ever more possible, my aesthetic turns to more simple and rustic. Here are some bathrooms I´ve found.

I like the contrast between the glass shower enclosure and the exposed stone. (This is a stunning seaside cottage project from the Knickerbocker Group.)

Love all the texture, although I´m starting to worry about cleaning soap scum off of brick/stone.

Love the arrangement of shower and tub. Possibly a polished cement tub poured in place?

My undying love of zinc. Ridiculous chandelier. I hate whimsey. And you kids get off my lawn.

V thinks we should eliminate the tub altogether, since we both shower. I think that when we´re creaking from gardening, it might be a good idea to have a tub to soak in. Clawfoot tubs are everywhere, but we probably can´t afford one here, they´re not easy to find and considered Antiques. I do like the enclosed kind. Maybe wood panelled.

Of course there´s always the chance we´ll be lucky to end up with this.

Maurice Bernard Sendak (June 10, 1928 – May 8, 2012)

My first job ever was clerking in the Children´s Room in the local library.

“There must be more to life than having everything.”

“You cannot write for children. They're much too complicated. You can only write books that are of interest to them. ”

“I said anything I wanted because I don't believe in children I don't believe in childhood. I don't believe that there's a demarcation. 'Oh you mustn't tell them that. You mustn't tell them that.' You tell them anything you want. Just tell them if it's true. If it's true you tell them.”

“If there's anything I'm proud of in my work--it's not that I draw better; there's so many better graphic artists than me--or that I write better, no. It's--and I'm not saying I know the truth, because what the hell is that? But what I got from Ruth and Dave, a kind of fierce honesty, to not let the kid down, to not let the kid get punished, to not suffer the child to be dealt with in a boring, simpering, crushing-of-the-spirit kind of way.”

“Can you draw a picture on the blackboard when somebody doesn't want you to? asked the rooster promptly. "Yes," answered Kenny," if you write them a very nice poem." "What is an only goat?" "A lonely goat," answered Kenny. The rooster shut one eye and looked at Kenny. "can you hear a horse on the roof?" he asked. "If you know how to listen in the night," said Kenny. "Can you fix a broken promise?" "Yes," said Kenny,"if it only looks broken, but really isn't." The rooster drew his head back into his feathers and whispered, "What is a very narrow escape?" "When somebody almost stops loving you," Kenny whispered back.”

May it be the wildest rumpus ever.

Casa Teillor

When we´re staying around Melide for a couple of days we always book at the Casa Teillor, which we originally found on Turgalicia, an excellent online resource.

Teillor is a tiny aldea located a couple of kilometers south of Melide and the rural hotel is a complex of old buildings converted into apartments.  These days, we call Alicia, the manager/housekeeper who lives down the road in her own house and make arrangements with her.  She´s delightful and eager to help in any way she can.  We sometimes don´t arrive until quite late if we´ve started out after V leaves work, but everything is always ready and waiting for us.

There are apartments of up to 3 bedrooms available and all have kitchens and fireplaces (V´s favorite thing) and come fully furnished.  They manage to preserve the rustic quality of the old stone buildings with high beamed ceilings while having a fresh, modern polish.

There is a covered wood pile to select from, as well as an outbuilding turned into a grilling area.  Popular with larger groups.

We think it´s quite a lovely spot.

Happy May Day

Just got back from a long weekend in Melide.  Rained the whole time, but that just adds to the romance of it all.  The parts of the ruin that were standing are still standing.  Met with the technical architect and showed him around the place.  Met with the builder and assigned which windows go where.  Ate, drank, watched the fire, shot pool, and took long drives.
