ETA: Even more apologies for not replying to your lovely comments. It´s an issue of logging in to Blogger through Google, I think. But I have yet to figure out how to get around it. Sorry!

Apologies for not posting in so long. I´ve been busy with the flower farm and trying to minimize the destruction of the puppy princess. Add to that ongoing family drama and there´s little time for blogging.

We´ve had a very unpredictable spring in terms of weather. Heat waves in February and May, lately cold snaps and ¨cyclogenesis explosivos¨ or cold front rainstorms with high winds. We even had a frost yesterday, in the middle of June.

It seems to me that I´ve been blogging about the garden for so long, and I don´t want to bore those who aren´t interested. I have been visiting florists and the reception has been generally positive, though orders are non-existant. I need to work on selling.
The latest culinary project is chive infused vinegar. Very simple to make, it´s about 1 cup of chive flowers to 1 1/2 cups of white vinegar. Crush the flowers (fresh and not too past their peak) before adding the vinegar. Let sit 2 weeks at room temperature in dark storage. Strain and ready for use on salads. It turns a beautiful pink color. I´m going to give more thought to edible flowers.
Briga continues to be a challenge at eight months. Now weighing in at 30 kilos, her latest obsession, aside from digging and stealing footwear to chew on, is climbing. We found her up on the ¨roof¨ of the barn the other day. V nearly broke his neck getting her down. At least the enclosure around the flower patch is finished and seems to be working. Fingers crossed.

In other news, there are projects on the horizon. I desperately need a space to store craft stuff and process harvested flowers, so I´m studying the Swedish empire catalogue for cabinets to finish the laundry area. And we may finally see progress on the barn this summer. Stay tuned.

Galicia remains bewitchingly beautiful, and thankfully far away from the horrors which dominate the news. I´ve planted tomatoes, onions, carrots and green beans, along with more flowers. The roses have been particularly spectacular this year. We have firewood that should see us through the end of the year. Breo continues to be a miracle of patience and loyalty, especially when I´d like to strangle his little sister.

The weather has been, to say the least, changeable. We had a series of hot sunny days for the last half of March and now it´s raining again.

While it was warm and dry, Manolo the tractor guy came by and did a final discing of the new areas. V and I rented a post hole digger and managed to get the posts up before the rain started again. Now we need to brace the corners and put on the metal mesh fencing. I still have to figure out gates. All that has to be in place before I can start creating raised beds because the dogs will destroy all the work in record time.

We also had a visit from the well-digger. As was to be expected, he immediately dismissed the exiting bore hole (with visible, standing water) as too small and essentially useless. He actually got out a water wand and walked around for a while. Now, knowing that basically anywhere you pick up a rock around here has a spring underneath, especially at this time of year, I think this was mostly theatre. And, for the princely sum of 1500 - 2000 €, they could dig us a new well, which would then need electrical service for the pump and a structure. Keep in mind our city water bill is about 25€ every three months. The numbers don´t really pencil out. So if anyone has suggestions as to what we can rig together to make the existing pipe work, while we wait to have roofs and storage tanks appear, let me know.

As far as flowers, the anemones are just beautiful and seem quite happy. I´m definitely planting more next year. On the other hand, the ranunculus started flowering with the heat wave after suffering from some freeze burn and botrytis. So they´re a little skimpy on foliage, quite short, and now unhappy to be in the pouring, cold rain. Next year low tunnels are going to be on the to-do list.

Briga is 5 months old now. On the plus side, she´s beautiful and healthy and starting to have moments of calm. One the other hand, she´s very naughty and is convinced she´s a goat. She´s never seen anything she didn´t want to climb. Walls, structures, tables, she wants a bird´s eye view.

So V was in Madrid for work for a week and we started out with this. Briga is also intensely interested in mining studies. She has started excavations all around the property. This is a dry stack planter for a grape vine we hope will eventually shade the south facing façade of the house. We stacked some extra rock around the grapevine to discourage her attentions.

A couple of days later, I went out the kitchen door to find this. Note the presence of her ¨supervisor.¨

Besides the digging and the climbing, she has knocked over or broken off a bunch of the ranunculus and snapdragons and dug up roses and dianthus. She´s recently started in on the tulips emerging from the ground and pulled out all the gladiolus bulbs from the raised beds.

Oh, and nobody bothered to tell me that bagged, pelleted organic horse manure is like crack to dogs. Both of them had their heads in the plant containers for days after I put it out.

Sturdy fencing will have to wait until the expanded planting area is disced once more, probably in April, and then I can start sinking fence posts.

And then V came home. (Notice the Briga effect on the other planter.)Cocohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01002346978289429622noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8499671076590096775.post-15078673887463962522019-02-08T10:21:00.000+01:002019-02-08T10:21:03.965+01:00Buy Local and Seasonal for Valentine´s Day

It´s time for my annual reminder. If you´re planing to order flowers for someone for Valentine´s Day, or any other flowery holiday, please ask if they source from local producers. Even if they don´t, every year more florists do buy locally and it raises awareness that consumers care about where their product comes from and the environmental and economic impact their purchases have. As a favor to your florist, reserve early.

Local flower farms tend to be small acreage, family run, and many follow organic principals, even if they aren´t certified. They benefit local economies, and provide vital resources for local wildlife and insect populations which are in critical conditions in many areas.

Since the 1990´s, cheap imported flowers from South America and Africa
have had an enormous impact on domestic production, both in the US and
Europe. Items imported from abroad are not required to meet the same
labor and
environmental standards as those grown domestically. The flowers in your
typical supermarket bouquet, in other words, were likely tended by
underpaid laborers exposed to harmful pesticides, preserved with
chemicals, and cut days or even weeks earlier.

Needless to say, this is hardly beneficial to local economies or the
environment. And, much like the local food movement, Debra Prenzing and
the Slow Flower movement have been working to raise awareness in the
States of the impact of domestically produced flowers. Their manifesto:

Slow Flowers commits to the following practices:

To recognize and respect the seasons by celebrating and designing with flowers when they naturally bloom

To reduce the transportation footprint of the flowers and foliage consumed in the marketplace by sourcing as locally as possible

To support flower farmers small and large by crediting them when
possible through proper labeling at the wholesale and consumer level

To encourage sustainable and organic farming practices that respect people and the environment

To eliminate waste and the use of chemical products in the floral industry

So, should you be of a mind to send someone some lovely flowers for
Valentine´s, please consider asking for locally grown, be they American,
British or Spanish grown flowers. Grown not flown.
On the last day of a sunny spell, Manolo the tractor guy came and disced the expansion of the flower patch to about double, and the old garden that took me literally years to dig by hand. He´ll come back when it stops raining in May to re-disc and leave it nice and crumbly for making raised beds. I´m thinking I´d like a perennial/physic/monks garden with herbs and roses up in that corner, but for the time being it´s just a big muddy space where the dogs get filthy.

Yesterday, I re-trenched along the old patch, in anticipation of the two weeks of rain predicted. I´m tired. And crabby. And what´s really exhausting is that continual sense that you don´t know what you´re doing. I wish I could have started all this 5 years ago, but that´s the way these things go, I guess. Better now that 5 years later. As it is, I have to do everything in half hour intervals after doggie walks, between doggie meals, during doggie naps and for the time Briga will tolerate being tied up and teased by her big brother, assuming it´s not raining.
My biggest challenges right now are the weather and the dogs. The puppy gets under the plastic mesh and what she doesn´t dig up, she tramples. She´ll go wild when I start flinging old horse bedding around. Now I´m tired again just thinking about it.

It´s time again for that year in review post.

I´m afraid not much on the list of 2018 got done - again. Once again, economics got in the way of the bigger projects.

No well.
No barn.
No laundry room.

But, I did make progress on the flower farm. Didn´t sell anything at the market as they have a waiting list and a 2 page long list of administrative requirements, but I gave away several nice bouquets to neighbors (bonus points for social engagement), had lots for guests over the summer, started up an Instagram account, refocused the Romanesca Facebook page and got actual enquiries from other businesses. Met some guys in Pontevedra who are absolutely deeeelightful and have exactly the same interests in wild, organic flowers and greenery that I do. They are keeping me sane and giving me hope. If you´re in Pontevedra check out Indigobygm. And, I´m in a Whatsup chat with several other women who are flower farming around Spain, so I can ask questions and get experienced answers. Thank you social media! Did a lot of reading and planted a bunch of seeds and bulbs/corms in the fall for Spring 2019.

And Breo is now enrolled in school at Montegatto, in Oza dos Rios. We´ve signed up for 10 classes with the trainer, who will help us out on basic obedience and getting him to cooperate a little more on the leash.

And finally, we brought home Briga! She is growing apace, and starting to settle down into a good puppy. Not quite so much ferocious biting, lots more tail wagging and we´re tremendously relieved she sleeps through the night now. We´ll be applying what we learn with Breo to her, and hope to have 2 well-behaved, well-adjusted canine companions by summertime.

In the meantime, we´re stocking up on more firewood during this frosty spell. Now looking at two weeks of rainy weather, and so, so much more weeding to do.

Whilst we are incorporating Briga into the routine, getting anything done is a challenge. So I thought I´d just post some photos of the mushrooms Breo and I have seen on our morning walks. This seems to be a cracking year with so much rain in November.

I don´t know much about fungi. There´s a lot I don´t know about a lot of stuff, and frankly, mushrooms aren´t high on the list. I don´t pick them for two reasons - 1. I would no doubt poison myself directly and 2. There are lots and lots of more knowledgeable people around who do, so I figure I should leave the ones I see to repopulate. They are really beautiful and interesting in their range of shapes and sizes, so here is a selection.

Salutations and well met!

It is I, Breogán, Chief of Security and I have commandeered the glowing screen device to inform the wider public that I am happy to announce that I´ve finally gotten a staff increase approved by management. It is my great pleasure to introduce our new intern, Brigantia, Pearl in the Crown of the Ancient Kingdom of Galicia.

She has mastiff credentials on her mother´s side with additional guarding qualifications in German Shepherd (and I suspect from his impressive mustachios, some wire-haired gryphon tracking aptitudes, as well) from her father. All in all, she brings the whole package to the mix. She comes to us highly recommended and I´m sure will be an invaluable addition to the operation.

She is quite young at eight weeks, but you can never start too early with a new recruit and I fully expect her to be assisting in standard investigative and monitoring operations within a few months. I will, of course, personally oversee her progress and initiation into the mysteries of the Mastiff Code and ongoing training in critter patrol, bone hiding/rotation and ball keep-away.

In the meantime, please join me in woofing her a warm welcome to the team.

Constant vigilance!
As predicted, no sooner had we put up the clothesline than the weather changed. First, a plunge in temperatures with snow on the hilltops, then wet and rainy.
Leaves are starting to turn and mushrooms are popping up all over. The woodstove is crackling.

Fortunately, the rain means the burn ban has been lifted, so we got 2 years worth of trimmings and weeds out of the way. Last year, it started to rain in November, didn´t quit until May and something always prevented us from doing it when we had a permit number up to July when burning is banned for the summer, so at least we´ve gotten something accomplished. This, after moving a pile of beams, will allow for expansion of the growing space. Assuming it stops raining.
Musings on mulch. I was delighted to find straw at one of the ag stores and bought some for mulch on paths and beds. Unfortunately, as you can see, it doesn´t do the job. And it also provides cover for the d@mn voles. So off will come the straw from the beds and I will hand weed.
Got the foxgloves and the early sweet peas in. Next up are the aquilegias, dutch iris and tulips. And I´m unsure about when to dig and lift the dahlias, as they need a hard frost and there´s no telling whether we´ll get one or when.

And sadly, I learned of the sudden death of an old friend from my university days in Texas. She broadened my horizons and deepened my understanding, both valuable things in your twenties. I reconnected with her again after 20 odd years via social media, and learned of her passing the same way. I always thought someday she´d come over and we´d share some good food and better conversation. RIP Tipler, you´ll be missed. Suddenly, these misty autumn days are more poignant and melancholy.
After discussing for years where it should go, we finally got a clothesline up. Just in time for the weather to turn, and we´ll probably have to dry clothes inside anyway.
We had the posts made at a metalworks down the road. The trick was keeping it relatively close to the house, but out of potential traffic patterns, and far enough from the trees to avoid bird droppings. Now lots of space for sheets and pairs of jeans.
The roses are giving their final performance. Here, Apricot Nectar celebrates the cooler temperatures with an explosion of apricot. She seems to be hitting her stride in her third year.
The electrical crews came and laid waste to the areas under the high tension wires. These guys don´t mess around! It seems to me they might as well put down some grass and give a concession to a shepherd as pay a team of guys with heavy equipment every few years. By next spring, this will all be bracken again.
Tasks in the garden are bringing in the (very few) pumpkins, taking out the remains of the veg, reconditioning the beds and planting fall bulbs. The daffodils are the only bulbs that come back here, and I thought it was lack of chilling hours. But since the voles ate half the carrot harvest and did some damage to the potatoes, now I think they ate all the tulips and crocus that were planted.

Fencing barriers and layers of grit aren´t practical in my cut-flower context. My dear friend W, brought me a bottle of castor oil from my favorite chemist shop in Madrid on a recent visit, and I´m going to try a mix of oil, dishwashing liquid and water as a vole repellent. I read that cats are the only reliable method of control, but Breo has vetoed that option.

In local news, a friend had an unplanned litter of puppies, so I figured flowers were appropriate for becoming a new ¨grandma¨. More on this anon.
The sad, wet remnants of hurricane Michael are passing over this week. Hopefully, the fire ban will be lifted and we can get the burn pile taken care of. After that, I´m hoping to call the tractor guy to expand the planting area again and then I´ll have until next spring to trench, shape the beds and fence. Busy times. Still canning/bottling from the veg plot. The courgettes/zucchinni are on their last and the pumpkin harvest this year looks miserable, perhaps 2 or 3. The roses are doing their fall flush and the dahlias are still flowering, but shorter. Ripping out the old annual flowers, bringing in manure and prepping new beds. Trying a little seed saving.
I´ve been seeding hardy annuals, and the biannual starts that germinated. I really need a course in seed starting, my germination percentage is miserable. The ranunculus, iris and tulip order is on the way. Not so many tulips as the ones I´ve planted around come up about 3 inches and then disappear forever. Perhaps not enough chilling.
The guests have gone home, the mornings have an autumn chill, and I have veg and fruit to deal with.

The good news is that the tomatoes and tomatillos produced after all! I took the advice offered and just waited to see if I´d get a crop, and while a number were brown and blotchy from the blight, there are quite a few perfectly acceptable tomatoes. There is also, for the first time, some blossom end rot.

Mostly it´s obvious, as in the upper case here. But, I have also found rot inside some that were apparently perfect on the outside, just as a word to the wise. One of the benefits of quartering and roasting the tomatoes before saucing, I guess.
The tomatillos finally sized up on the ones I planted earliest. Also roasted for salsa. If only there were some cilantro left, but it all bolted weeks ago. Hoping for at least one more picking and will try mixing in some golden tomatoes to the pan.
The potatoes were small and not very numerous and a number were nibbled. As were these, so I pulled them all. No sense encouraging the varmints.
And it´s a great apple year. So I tried another apple pie recipe from Smitten Kitchen - Dutch Apple Pie, and I´m glad to report that it´s delish, and our apples didn´t turn to mush in the oven!
The crust is interesting on this one, more like cookie dough and not as elastic as short crust, and I´m afraid I rolled it out too thin, it wanted to collapse in the latticing. And I had no raisins on hand, so I threw in a handful of walnuts. But tasty, nonetheless, and I may be enjoying it for breakfast.
The weather finally broke, taking us from 90 degrees to 70. Breo is most pleased.

The power went out, and when it came on again for some reason the circuit controlling the ceiling lights kept tripping. First, we checked all the light bulbs in the house, but that made no difference, so we called the electrician, who came (!) and located a split cable. He thinks it got hit by a nail when they were installing the flooring. Just a coincidence? All now working again and for only 50€.
We´ve discovered mice, once again, in the kitchen. Traps now laid and cabinets cleaned.

I met with two lovely women who run a local florist shop. They were very nice and informative, but I went home with all the flowers as they were considered too short and too open to be useful. Still, I dread this whole face-to-face thing so much that I´m chuffed I´ve started the process. Must prick out the biennials today before the rain starts.

I wish this was going to be more positive, but lately I´m a little frustrated.

The weather this year has been challenging, to say the least. A looooooong wet spring, followed by an alternating cool wet/hot dry summer has played havoc with anything planted.

So far, lettuce, peas, onions, peppers, french beans, courgettes/zucchinni are all being eaten as well as parsley, cilantro and basil. Carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, tomatillos, and broad beans are on the way.

Unfortunately, once again the tomatoes and potatoes came down with late blight and I filled two large trash bags of affected foliage yesterday for disposal.

The spring onions went directly to flowering, which means they won´t store. Never had that happen before, but they´re tough and useless in salads.

Frankly, I´m reconsidering the potatoes and peas for next year. The peas never seem to climb or produce well, this year they´ve got mildew, and they´re cheap, frozen in the store. I always plant potatoes mostly just to get started in the spring, but again, Galicia is a big potato producer so I can get good, if basic white/yellow varieties, reasonably priced potatoes in the shops. I had some small red fingerlings saved for planting, but they rotted before the weather improved. I don´t know what to do about the tomatoes. Probably I overcroweded them since I was so thrilled that they actually germinated and grew. I reluctantly used the last of the copper spray, late and obviously not effective, but that will get washed off soon in the odd summer weather we´re having. I guess blight is just omnipresent in the environment round these parts.

August offers more family visits/dramas, lots more effing housecleaning (OMG the spiders!) and less work done. And for various reasons, my plans for the flower business are being delayed by at least 6 months, so there will be no poly tunnel or irrigation system this year. I´ll have to put my efforts into market research and play around with natural dyes and dry flowers I think. I´ve got trays of biennials germinating (hopefully) so need to get started on a couple of beds for them.

And now, really all I want to do is sit in the shade on the patio and drink. Which won´t accomplish anything, but there it is.

Hope all your summers are idyllic and filled with bbqs and beaches!
This is always the perfect excuse to do some siteseeing, although for some reason between my phone and the camera I don´t seem to have many pictures.

Our area is not exactly rich in tourist attractions, but since it was raining off and on for most of their visit, we went to the nearby waterfall. I don´t know if it´s budget cuts or lack of interest, but the vegetation was so thick a lot of the view was obscured. Lots of water falling, though.
Then we went to the Monastery at Sobrado dos Monxes, an imposing baroque structure built for the Cistercians. I blogged about their lake here, when V and I stumbled on it after a wrong turn.
The Cistercians are supposed to be the ¨engineers¨ of the orders, so I was amused by their method of keeping people from coming in directly through the front doors, instead of the preferred route of the tour through the gift shop. Simple, but effective.
We also spent a day in La Coruña climbing the Torre de Hercules, the oldest functioning lighthouse in Western Europe, ate tapas for lunch in the old city center and swung by a little 16th century castle fortress in Santa Cruz built to fortify defenses of the bay.
In some far away future, when the barn is enclosed, the scooter will live there and we´ll use this for firewood storage.
The complicating factor was building on top of the septic tank. So the forward posts aren´t excavated, they´re fixed with the planters. The back posts are fixed to the wall.

He may be getting the hang of this DIY thing.

At last. Long, warm sunny days. And I´m always behind on the weeding.

We dug out the solar lights and the cushions for the patio. V sanded and applied a few coats of teak oil to the table tops, and we planted some annuals in the planters. Now, that corner is ready for barbecues and summer visitors.

Finally got enough elderflowers together to try the River Cottage cordial recipe again. Last time, whilst lemony and refreshing, there was a nasty aftertaste to the concoction. Apparently, there are elder trees and better elder trees.

General directions are to add lemon and orange zest to the cleaned blooms. Shake them a lot, there were a ton of tiny, tiny black insects on them. Also, I read somewhere to take as much of the stem off as possible.

Pour boiling water over and let steep over night.

Strain the flowers into a pot, add sugar and the juice of the lemons and orange and bring to a simmer to dissolve. I didn´t have an orange on hand, so I just threw in a half a cup of orange juice. I also only used about 3/4 of the sugar in the recipe.

While a definite improvement on the first batch, no funky aftertaste this time, this isn´t quite as lemony and refreshing and is really too sweet for my taste, even mixed with sparkling water. But for someone who enjoys sweet drinks, it would probably make a picturesque, summery refreshment. I wonder if vodka would help.
Great year for wild foxgloves and broom. The hedge roses are flowering, while the garden roses are a little slower to open, waiting for more sun.

I´ve started on the sunny end, dividing beds between flowers and veg. So far, tomatoes, peppers, tomatillos, corn and peas have gone in, still trying to decide where to put the courgettes/zucchinni. Believe it or not, this year I´ve got more tomato plants than room for on the two sections of fencing, so I´ll have to find space for another. Still to germinate are the pumpkins, squashes, cucumbers and melons. Carrots have sprouted. I figure I have about 3 more beds on this end to put in.
After losing almost all the flower seedlings earlier, I´m struggling to get germination. I finally direct seeded and now will have to spend a lot of time hoeing grass out of the beds. Dahlias went in. The sweet peas haven´t exactly leapt out of the ground, but they haven´t died either. Roses and ranunculus are budding up and the iris is spectacular this year.
With better weather, summer temperatures actually, I´ve been making raised beds for planting and seeding into trays. The soil has lots of stones, lots of grass rhizomes, and very few worms. I despair of getting it to a ¨fine tilth¨.
I´m happy to report that I have had more success with tomatoes this year - look, proper little plants! I took Nicky´s advice and bought a heat mat to help out and it seems to be helping.
I´ve had some trouble with germination from both flower seeds and herbs. You´d think herbs would germinate pretty easily, but apparently not.

I bought some onion starts, lettuces and potatoes from the farmer´s market. This week I´ll get some peas for the trellis, since the pea seeds I have didn´t impress me last year. The lettuces are marking a row of parsnip seeds and there are some bush beans at the end of the row. As it turns out, there´s a waiting list to get a vendor´s spot and a whole lot of paperwork required so that plan is on hold for the time being. After the atrocious spring weather, I´ll take this year to see how the flowers and herbs do and get some experience succession sowing and conditioning.
The new roses are putting on foliage, but some of them seem to have canker, which will have to be pruned off. It´s only affecting 2 or 3, but it hurts me to prune more off when they´re so small. The more established roses are thriving, especially with this sun and high temperatures, as are the irises.

A potpourri of recent activities. The rhubarb continues to bloom. This is for all of you who prefer your rhubarb in nice red stalks, just so you know what a blooming plant looks like.

Also, they came and finished the installation of the stove hood. There was a lot of grinding and a strong smell of ozone in the kitchen when they finished, but it does the job. I might not have used white silicone caulk, but it´s done. Now I really want a steel plate to cover the hole in the wall where the stovepipe goes to the chimney.

And since there was a sudden break in the weather, and we´re now getting 24C/80F and sunshine, the mud has turned to cement. The pasture grass came back while the rain was falling, so I´ve gotten some black plastic and weed fabric spread to try some occultation weed control until I can get to making the remaining many, many raised beds.

In the meantime, I got a start on planting the roses that were languishing in their pots. Th fence posts are in, but I haven´t found a local source for plastic rolled fencing to keep Breo out of the garden and provide a little wind break.

Speaking of Breo, it is such a joy to see him galloping around like his old self. We´re still pondering finding him a little sister to play with, since he thinks I go outside just to throw him the ball all morning.

And lastly, as I was giving him some well-deserved tummy scratches, he swiped me with a paw and managed to scratch my eye. I guess my reflexes aren´t what they used to be. So I´ve spent the last few days recovering in piratical fashion with eye patches, and applications of antibiotic ointments and eye drops. The good news is I got a tetanus booster in the process so I can fling manure and compost around with even more abandon.Cocohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01002346978289429622noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8499671076590096775.post-82291214247823808032018-04-09T15:04:00.001+02:002018-04-09T15:04:38.083+02:00Mutant RhubarbAs I´m setting posts to keep Breo out of the new patch, I have a question. Is this normal? Rhubarb planted last year.
Whilst it continues to rain, we´ve at last made progress indoors. The second set of appliance people finally, after 2 months, came and installed the stove hood and dishwasher! Woot!

It´s not quite done, though functioning. They´re supposed to be back to put up the rest of the stainless steel covering for the tubing after the holiday weekend. We´ll see.
