Canal Plus is in the middle of this HBO series based on the first book in the fantasy trilogy by George R. R. Martin and let me just say - I.am.hooked.
It´s got everything:
a complicated plot, an enormous cast, beautiful production values, political intrigue, madness, incest, murder, attempted murder, a half-seen creepy supernatural threat,
lightly clothed barbarians, swordfights, sex, a charmingly snarky dwarf and. . .direwolves!
They´re using Northern Inuit dogs. So gorgeous!
I may have found my summer reading.
David read the book on our way to Australia, and he was not as impressed by the book, as he was the miniseries...

Have patience through the first couple of episodes, there are a lot of characters and political connections to get familiar with. I couldn´t find the whole speech Old Nan gives, but there´s something in there about giant spiders. Woot!
ReplyDeleteI quite enjoyed the entire series of books in the Song of Fire and Ice Trilogy. They're heavily character driven, with much less emphasis on magic and monsters than many fantasy novels. They're also much more ambiguous than the standard "good" versus "evil" fare. It would be interesting to see how well they've translated the novel to the screen, but as we don't have Sky I won't be finding out any time soon.
